Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Estrace (estradiol) offers patients a replacement for the natural production of estrogen when such levels are low, due to menopause, removal or damage to the ovaries, and similar conditions. Patients also sometimes buy Estrace to treat breast or prostate cancer in certain scenarios.
This product should be distinguished from other formulations; Estrace also makes vaginal creams and patches, but this particular page is about tablets. Where applicable the most direct formulation should be used; for instance, if suffering from vaginal atrophy but no other symptoms, the vaginal cream is preferable to tables or patches. However, when other medications are unsuitable or multiple symptoms are present, Estrace may preferred.
Patients buy Estrace to treat:
Patients can also buy Estrace equivalents by other names, including Elleste Solo, Femtrace, and Gynodiol, among others.
Estrace Tablets
Tablets are available in 1 or 2 mg doses. Treatment usually consists of taking one to three doses per day for several weeks to several months. Food is optional, but can reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Regardless of what patients buy Estrace to treat, the lowest effective dose taken for the shortest possible time is ideal. Estrace does carry some risk of severe side effects, including breast cancer.
Note that all women who have an intact uterus, regardless of menopause, should not take estrogen supplements without also taking a progestin, another hormone that will help reduce risk of uterine cancer. Women who have had their uterus removed and men do not need to worry about taking a progestin.
Menopause, Vaginal Atrophy, and Hypogonadism
These conditions are usually caused by unusually low levels of estrogen. Vaginal atrophy is a symptom, and for some women it is the only significant symptom experienced during menopause. Again vaginal creams, such as Ovestin Cream, are preferred; Estrace should be used only if these products are not suitable. Both menopause and hypogonadism produce very similar symptoms of mood swings, hot flashes, and so forth.
Estrace can significantly mitigate low-estrogen symptoms. Treatment is simple:
The need to continue Estrace treatment for menopause should be reassessed every 3 to 6 months; hormone replacement therapy is not meant to be permanent. Most women will adjust and no longer experience menopause symptoms after a while.
Osteoporosis
Estrogen supplements like Estrace are not the ideal treatment for osteoporosis; non-estrogen medications, such as raloxifene, are preferred. However, when these other medications are not suitable, patients may buy Estrace instead. It is usually recommended only in women who are at high risk of osteoporosis.
There are no official guidelines regarding dosage and duration of treatment in using Estrace for this purpose. Speak with a doctor.
Cancer
Note that many breast cancers are estrogen-positive, meaning they feed off of estrogen. Supplements like Estrace can be very negative in cancer treatment without doctor approval and involvement.
In the majority of cases treatment will begin with a non-estrogen medication, such as tamoxifen. Some patients---not all---develop resistance to these medications, in which the cancer begins responding poorly to treatment. It is in these cases that administering estrogen can help significantly, causing the cancer to shrink. By the time the cancer is no longer responding well to estrogen, other medications may once again be beneficial.
Cancer is a complex subject and treatment will be individualized. Starting guidelines are:
Doctor instructions may deviate from the above and should always be followed closely when using Estrace to combat cancer.
